Peanut butter…without the peanuts!

WowbutterI can hardly believe it but I’m about to enter my third month of project No Nasties (alcohol, caffeine and dairy) in a bid to wave goodbye to not-so-new mum frazzle and fatigue and rediscover pre-pregnancy levels of health and wellbeing. I say no nasties: I must admit to falling off the wagon once or twice wine-wise, and the odd diet coke may have passed my lips, but overall I’ve had a pretty good stab at it.

While I’m at it I’ve decided to embrace the whole free-from revolution and opt for gluten-free and whatever-else-I-can-get-my-hands-on-free at the same time. Why not? In for a penny, in for a pound. And you can now get peanut butter without the peanuts. Or any other sort of nut. And it actually tastes – and looks - like peanut butter (pictured).

It’s basically a toasted soya spread which hails from Canada, and you can get it in Holland & Barrett, Booths and Whole Foods Market (rrp £4.99 for 500g). It’s nut-free, gluten-free, dairy-free and egg-free and comes in creamy and crunchy consistencies just like peanut butter. Oh, and because of the soy it’s a great source of Omega 3.

I gave it to BB on toast with jam and she didn’t bat an eyelid, and I’d challenge anyone to tell the difference in a blind taste test. And with more and more schools banning peanut butter to protect those with allergies, here’s your solution. The jars even come with little ‘lunch box labels’ so you can mark said sandwiches ‘nut-free’.

I think even Paddington bear could be tempted…

  1. That’s pretty clever! I haven’t had peanut butter for ages! Plus, surely this is a good alternative for the pregnant mummy’s that avoid peanuts during pregnancy/breastfeeding.

That’s true – I didn’t think of mums-to-be as well…I didn’t avoid peanut butter when I was pregnant but have received some pretty horrified looks when I’ve told people since. This would be just the stuff if you were erring on the side of caution…
